COURAGEOUS UNITRANS DRIVERS THWART HIJACKER

Climbing into the cab after his rest break, Unitrans Sugar and Agriculture Driver Dumisani Gumede discovered an armed hijacker had gained access to the truck.  With an R5 automatic rifle pointed at him Dumisani was ordered to drive to Empangeni.

As the truck approached the outskirts of Empangeni, Dumisani saw an opportunity to grab the rifle barrel and a tussle ensued during which several shots were fired in the cab.  With the vehicle stationary, the two fell out of the cab onto the ground still wrestling for the gun.

At this stage a Unitrans Freight and Logistics driver on the EXXARO contract, T. Sibiya arrived on the scene and seeing the Unitrans truck with no one in the cab he stopped and approached the vehicle.  It was then that he spotted the two men wrestling on the ground.

With the hijacking gone wrong, the suspect managed to jump up and try to run away but Sibiya ran after him and grabbed him.   A passing police van stopped and the suspect was arrested.

Dumisani suffered bad bruising to his shoulder and left leg during the fight and fall to the ground.  Both Dumisani Gumede and T. Sibiya are commended on their selfless attitude, and Sibaya’s concern for his fellow driver’s welfare is outstanding.
